During a meeting of the Mapungubwe Foundation on Monday, 7 August, a unanimous decision saw the 80-year-old Mr Leif Rahmqvist, who founded the foundation 10 years ago in aid of less privileged children in the Alldays area, step down as chairman of the foundation.
Rahmqvist's decision to step down was made because of his age, which makes flying around and attending meetings increasingly difficult for him. As a result, a new chairman and board of directors were chosen. Mr Frans Mphateng from the municipality in Alldays was elected as chairman, while Mr Mike Makwela of the municipality's legal department was elected as a director. Mr Stefan Serakalala is the vice-chairman of the foundation, while Rahmqvist was made honorary president of the foundation.
As part of the re-shuffle, Rahmqvist also donated the building (housing the orphanage in Alldays) and all its contents to the Mapungubwe Foundation. He also wished them well on their future endeavours and added that, in principle, he would continue to support the foundation.
From the foundation's side, gratitude was expressed toward Rahmqvist, his wife and the Rahmqvist family for the difference they had made in the lives of local orphans the past 10 years. Mphateng also expressed his gratitude towards Rahmqvist, as well as Erwee Attorneys for their previous as well as future support of the Rahmqvist Foundation's projects. Rahmqvist and his family will remain committed to projects in the Alldays area and are at present looking at getting involved with research for the prevention of malaria, which is once again becoming a big problem in the Musina area.
