Rodney "Rama G" Ramagalela (35), a former striker for clubs such as Black Leopards, Polokwane City, Mamelodi Sundowns, Highlands Park and Golden Arrows, announced his retirement from football last week.
Ramagalela, born in Mamvuka in the Nzhelele area, sustained an injury last season while playing for University of Pretoria in the Motsepe Foundation Championship League. This injury prompted him to end an illustrious football career, which included being crowned the top goal scorer in the 2017/18 DStv Premier League.
He began playing football at the age of 15, initially for the amateur side Mabvula All Stars. He then joined the development team of Black Leopards, Phungo All Stars, where he impressed selectors. In 2009, he secured a place in Black Leopards' first team.
Ramagalela reflected on his career, saying he enjoyed playing alongside talented teammates such as Mulondo Sikhwivhilu, Thokozani Mnguni, Muengedzi Bobe, Christopher Netshidzivhe and many more.
When asked about his current activities, Ramagalela said that while he had retired from professional football, his love for the game remained undiminished. Having recovered from his injury, he has been training independently at home. He now plans to focus on soccer development as he believes young players need serious guidance.
"Young players keep things simple, but they lack dedication to the sport. Football has become so commercialised that players often focus on making quick money. One thing that concerns me is how frequently players move between teams, which confuses the fans," he said.
Ramagalela expressed his worry that many players' careers are short-lived because they prioritise personal gains over long-term goals. He recalled his own struggles during the early days of his professional career but emphasised perseverance. "We used to buy our own soccer boots, and the same pair was used for both practice and games—unlike nowadays," he said.
He admitted that retiring was a difficult decision. "I struggled in my mind, because this was not the way I wanted to retire or announce my retirement," he said.
