South African dub poet and reggae artist Ras Glennie has returned with a new album, Presenting Ranking Dread Mash, reaffirming his place in roots reggae and dub poetry.
The album, now available on major digital platforms, follows his 14-track dub collection, Dub Poet Meets the Dub Prince Avante – Dub Cuts Fi Adam(ah), and features extended mixes and rich dub arrangements. It continues the musical journey Glennie began with Psalm Chant in 2001 and developed through Showcase in Dub Wise.
A key figure in the project is Dub Prince Avante, born Ramakuwela Avhantodi, who served as lead and rhythm guitarist, brass arranger, and main producer. Glennie calls him “my Scientist” for his skill in creating layered dub soundscapes.
The album also introduces Takalani Mashau of Mashamba in Tshikwarani village, performing as Ranking Dread Mash. His deep toasting style, reminiscent of classic reggae DJs, features prominently on tracks such as Glennie Number One Ext Mix.
The project pays tribute to dub pioneer Hopeton Brown and veteran Limpopo reggae broadcaster Mbulaheni Tshikororo of Phalaphala FM, celebrating their enduring influence on reggae culture.
