Another Grade 12 learner from Mbilwi Secondary School, Ravele Ramabulana (17), has made it to the Top 3 in the 2022 National English Olympiad, winning second place in the First Additional Language (FAL) section.
This nation-wide English examination, organised jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education, draws thousands of entries each year. Nearly 6 000 pupils wrote this year's English Olympiad paper in March this year, which only makes Ravele's achievement that more outstanding.
The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the National Schools Festival from 28 June to 1 July at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
"When I and other learners had been invited to write the English Olympiad essay and speech on societal problems and dilemmas that are faced today, I looked into complex short stories, a novelette, poems and monumental speeches. The theme of the competition was 'A Brave New World'. With that said, I advise my peers to showcase bravery and grab every opportunity they can, because opportunity never knocks twice," Ravele said.
He has also secured a scholarship from Rhodes University and De Beers Mine to further his studies. "Now, only the sky is the limit. I want to study towards an actuarial science degree next year."
Ms Prarochna Rama, one of the English Olympiad Officers, said the three-day programme was jam-packed with activities. The delegates participated in vibrant hands-on workshops and enjoyed a variety of challenging and dynamic shows and lectures, presented by experts with the special ability to motivate and inspire young people.
