Real Dope Boyy, a 19-year-old rapper from Venda, is steadily carving out a space for himself in South Africa's music scene. Born on 25 August 2006 and raised in Mukhumbani by his grandmother before moving to Shayandima Mavhoneni, he says his upbringing shaped both his outlook on life and his path into music.
"Growing up in Venda taught me what life is, what music is, and eventually built an artist like me today," he says.
Unlike many who inherit music through family traditions, Real Dope Boyy discovered it on his own. As a child, he struggled to write lyrics until a friend guided him. From there, he says, music began to flow through him.
His earliest influences were South African rap star Nasty C and local figure FFLR Chifo Charge, whose presence sparked his creativity.
The stage name Real Dope Boyy, he explains, came from wanting to project authenticity. Fans later dubbed him "Wamanzi," a nickname that has stuck.
He began taking music seriously in 2021 while still a pupil at Liivha Combined School in Block F, Thohoyandou. Early challenges included finding reliable beat production, securing performance opportunities and handling negativity in the industry. "I overcome all that by working hard and always staying positive," he says.
Real Dope Boyy describes his sound as melodic, with a smooth use of autotune and a mix of Venda and English. He compares it to the strum of a guitar, focused less on rap and more on emotion. "I believe music should not be complicated but smooth," he says.
When asked about achievements, he prefers to let supporters answer. "I do music for my people, not the name or the fame," he explains.
His most recent release drew inspiration from Thohoyandou, particularly the well-known Sekeleni circle. "Everyone who visits Venda eventually knows Thohoyandou Sekeleni, which is a beautiful piece of art for Venda," he says.
Now preparing to release an album titled Wamanzi this summer, he says the project reflects both his growth and daily experiences. "I make music off my experience on a daily basis," he says.
With dreams of collaborating with Nasty C, Real Dope Boyy says his focus is on longevity. "I am here to stay and nothing can stop my passion for music."
