The vital role played by funeral practitioners in ensuring dignified burials for the departed was celebrated during the annual Vhembe Funeral Practitioners Association (VEFPA) gala dinner held at the Khoroni Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort on Sunday, 31 May.
The event brought together funeral practitioners from across the Vhembe district, community leaders, representatives of religious groups, government officials and other stakeholders to reflect on the past year and recognise outstanding service within the funeral industry.
Among the guests were Thulamela Municipality mayor Cllr Sarah Rambuda, Vhembe District Municipality acting executive mayor Cllr Mildred Sinyosi, founder of Calvary Christian Church Dr Maxwell Masakona, representatives of the 15 South African Infantry Battalion military base, and other community leaders.
During the ceremony, funeral practitioners received certificates of appreciation from VEFPA president Mr Azwihangwisi Collen Radali and Mayor Rambuda in recognition of their dedication and commitment to serving bereaved families.
Addressing guests, Radali praised funeral practitioners for their tireless efforts despite the demanding nature of their work.
“We dedicate this day to these men and women who work tirelessly to ensure that the departed receive dignified funerals. They spend most of their time attending to families in distress and often have very little time for themselves and their loved ones. We want them to relax, celebrate and enjoy themselves for at least one day away from their busy schedules,” he said.
Radali also expressed concern about the challenges facing the industry, particularly the growing number of fly-by-night, unregistered and unscrupulous operators.
“The funeral industry is under pressure from people who are not properly registered and who take advantage of grieving families. We need to work together to protect the integrity of our profession and safeguard the public,” he said.
Rambuda commended funeral practitioners for the invaluable service they provide to communities.
“Do not underestimate the work you are doing. As a municipality, we value you as good and reliable partners. You are always there when we need you, especially when assisting with pauper burials and supporting families during difficult times,” she said.
