Ntsieni Crossby Thovhakale, better known by his stage name Cross Fire, is one of Venda's most determined reggae voices – a late bloomer who refused to let opportunity slip past him twice.
The 40-year-old artist grew up at Ha-Mailaskop and discovered his love for music at the age of 15. He was inspired by reggae-music greats such as Colbert Mukwevho, Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. Although the passion was evident from an early age, he did not pursue music initially as a career.
That changed during the Covid-19 lockdown period in 2020, when access to studio facilities finally gave him the push he needed. His debut single, Babylon, recorded early that year, marked the true birth of Cross Fire as a recording artist.
Guided by reggae teachings passed on by his uncle, former Radio Venda storyteller Fhatuwani Musigo, he embraced the Rastafarian way of life and developed a sound rooted in spirituality, resistance and hope. While hip-hop influenced his formative years, reggae ultimately became the rhythm that shaped his musical identity.
In 2021, Cross Fire released his debut album, Journey of Life, on his birthday. This was followed by his second project, Touch Down, in 2023. He has since collaborated with a number of regional artists, including DJ Laguga, Ras Triple B, Lutendo Cee Jay, King Kwazwo and Bashy Jah. His hit single Amagideon, directed by filmmaker Musiwa Makumbi of MSW Media, continues to gain traction on YouTube.
Beyond music, Cross Fire has ventured into acting, appearing in the 2023 film Fear or Love under Lion Empire Media.
He completed his matric at Tshiawelo High School in 2004 and later earned a BA in criminal justice from the University of Venda. Today, he runs his own label, Cross Fire Records, and a merchandise brand.
In November 2025, he released 10 new reggae singles, among them We Are Going to Zion, Don't Give Up, Africa Ri Farane and My African Lady, featuring artists such as Ras Government, Burning Fire and Mula Jay. He is currently finalising a new single, Real Love, featuring ASA Mango and Ras Triple B.
