Region's first equality court launched

History will be made on Tuesday, June 17 with the launch of the region's first Equality Court.

MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) – History will be made on Tuesday, June 17 with the launch of the region's first Equality Court.

The town of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) was chosen to host the court, with seven magisterial districts residing under it. Apart from Louis Trichardt, these districts include Thohoyandou, Musina, Mutale, Dzanani, Tshilwavhusiku and Giyani.

The aim of Equality Courts, to be launched nationally, will be to address issues of discrimination. Persons will be able to lodge civil cases regarding, amongst others, unfair discrimination in respect of race, gender and health. These courts are to be established in accordance with the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Discrimination Act, Act 4 of 2003.
