South African artist and producer Rickey Beats, born Eric Bongani Nemathaga in Tshitereke, has released Coffee Break Serenity, a track that reflects recovery, healing, and creative collaboration in a post-pandemic world.
The project began online, where Beats connected with fellow producers, engineers, and artists through a music distribution promotion group. “We listened to each other’s music and found common ideas,” he said. This exchange of instrumental clips — piano, guitar rhythms, and strings — gradually shaped the final track.
Beats describes the calm, reflective tone of the music as inspired by the period after the Covid-19 outbreak. “The melody illustrated survival, recovery, and healing. It was about life continuing after a difficult season,” he said.
Wearing multiple hats as an artist, producer, and pianist, Beats focused on creating immersive soundscapes that convey emotion without relying solely on lyrics. “Music was communication. Dynamics, attack, release, and velocity worked together. It was a science that went beyond lyrics,” he explained, noting the piano played a central role in the composition.
Reflecting on the collaborative process, Beats likens it to a currency exchange — where different creative forces combine to produce something stronger than the sum of its parts. Looking ahead, he sees Coffee Break Serenity as a milestone in his musical journey — representing both artistic growth and the power of connection across cultures.
