Attacks on nurses working in rural hospitals across Vhembe were among the problems raised during International Nurses Day celebrations on Monday, 12 May, at the Uniting Presbyterian Church of South Africa in Vhufuli village.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof Fhumulani Mulaudzi from the University of Pretoria paid tribute to the dedication of nurses, particularly those working in under-resourced rural facilities. She addressed nurses, retired nurses and hospital board members from Donald Fraser Hospital.

"Nurses are facing a lot of challenges, especially those working in rural clinics and hospitals, where there is no security. We need nurses who are safe, working in a good and conducive environment. We paid tribute to you nurses from Donald Fraser Hospital. We saw your sacrifice during Covid-19, where nurses worked 24/7 while putting their lives and their families at risk," said Prof Mulaudzi.

She added that Nurses Day was an occasion to recognise the nursing profession and its impact on society, coinciding with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego also extended her appreciation to nurses as part of the commemorations, describing them as the "heartbeat of our communities".

"This day serves as a reminder of the incredible work that nurses perform every day, showcasing their dedication, compassion, and professionalism, which form the cornerstone of our health-care system," said Mashego.

She acknowledged that conditions are not always ideal but encouraged nurses to persevere. "Their passion for nursing is what drives change and fosters healing in society. It is essential for nurses to know they are not alone — the department is committed to supporting them in every possible way," she said.
