In 2021, when the pressing issue of child abductions took centre stage in the Vhembe region, a group of women gathered for lunch at a local hotel in Thohoyandou. During this significant luncheon, the idea to establish a forum to provide support for women and families impacted by child kidnappings began to take shape.

Initially established as the Thohoyandou Women Support Group (TWSG), the organisation's impact resonated far beyond its inception. As time progressed, individuals from across the Vhembe District and even beyond its borders became aware of the organisation's positive endeavours, offering their assistance in the process.

On Saturday, 5 August, the organisation's members convened at Mandis Place to inaugurate the new Nzhelele branch. Coinciding with this launch, the organisation underwent a renaming, becoming the South African Disability and Victim Empowerment. The event attracted local community policing forum members, representatives from the SAPS, the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme, traditional leaders, and victims alike.

The visionary behind the organisation, Ms Mulatedzi Ramaano, said that their original intention had been to provide solace to families grappling with the disappearance of their children. However, their increasing prominence resulted in a broadening scope, encompassing issues of gender-based violence, divorce, and assistance for learners dealing with substance abuse. This reputation led individuals from various parts of Limpopo to seek their services, some traveling considerable distances for support.

Ramaano emphasised the evolving focus of the organisation, transcending its initial focus on women to embrace the broader community. Given these developments, expanding their reach became imperative, prompting the launch of additional branches to provide localised services. This expansion also prompted a name change to be more inclusive. The Nzhelele branch marks the organisation's inaugural presence outside of Thohoyandou, with aspirations to extend their reach nationwide. Ramaano conveyed their commitment to assisting numerous families, including those affected by rape, and reaffirmed their dedication to community well-being.

Individuals in need of assistance can contact Ramaano at 072 285 9225.
