Police in Musina are investigating after soldiers discovered explosives and illicit cigarettes in bushes behind a truck park on 23 April. The recovered items, including detonating fuses and 52 cartons of cigarettes, are valued at approximately R168,441.

Police in Musina have opened an investigation after explosives and illicit cigarettes were found hidden in bushes behind a truck park on Thursday morning, 23 April.

The discovery was made by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), who alerted police after spotting suspicious items near the site.

Police who responded to the scene recovered six reels of detonating fuse and 150 Carmex connector-capped fuses, with an estimated value of about R165,000.

Officers also found 52 cartons of Remington cigarettes, valued at about R3,441, at the same location.

The origin of the explosives and cigarettes, as well as their intended use, remains unclear.

Police said investigations were ongoing.
