Lutendo Evans Mugagadeli, better known as Vendaboy Poet, won a Best Poet award during the South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (Satma) recently held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng.

He was chosen as the winner over Sizwe Zakwe, Lee The Poet and Lucy Mbali.

"I thank everyone who voted for me. Without your support, I'm nothing. I would like to thank the almighty God for giving strength to work hard on my poetry without a manager. I believe God's time is the best. All had to happen because of his grace," the delighted poet said.

His sensational song Muphuresidenthe from his album titled Ndi Nnyi enabled him to scoop the award. "It is a privilege to find myself winning the award because the song that was nominated was dedicated to our president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa," he said.

Vendaboy (28) from Ha-Nthadalala outside Louis Trichardt, already has four albums under his belt. He used poetry to express himself, through the inspiration of nepotism, hate and discrimination. He recites his poetry in six different languages, Sepedi, Tshivenda, Tsonga, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa and English.

He is a former student of Central Johannesburg College (CJC) Parktown Campus and studied human resource management.

Vendaboy Poet will host an event for poets on 29 December at Thohoyandou Town Hall.
