"I feel very happy when people call me a bookworm, because I know education is the foundation for success." These are the inspiring words of amapiano star Rofhiwa Phaswana of Makonde village outside Thohoyandou.

Better known as Mabizana in the music industry, the academically accomplished artist holds a master's degree in political studies, as well as qualifications in basic firefighting, first aid and business writing. He is currently studying for his PhD in political studies at the University of Venda.

Despite his demanding studies, Mabizana finds time to nurture his music career. He is back with a new amapiano hit, Morena, which is already making waves in the fiercely competitive industry.

Having released two full kwaito albums in 2004 and 2006, Mabizana returned to the spotlight with his 2023 single Hedzi Bari, which received extensive radio play. Judging by its reception, Morena looks set to follow suit as fans continue to stream and download it online.

Morena showcases Mabizana's growth as an artist — from its polished production and mastering to his rich vocals — cementing his place on the amapiano scene.

"I'm back with full force and more maturity," said Mabizana. "Music evolves, and I refuse to be stuck in the past. I held listening sessions with industry experts before releasing Morena, and they all agreed it's one of the best amapiano songs out now. With the festive season approaching, it's my gift to fans who have supported me through thick and thin."

He added that he was planning gigs in Limpopo and Gauteng to promote the song. Morena was produced by DJ Stormylyzer, a well-known lekompo music producer. Mabizana's manager, Pastabluk Tshililo Ramurembiwa of Playlisted, praised him as a "unique musical genius" and one of the best artists he had worked with.
