The search for three-year-old Desire Munzhedzi, who went missing in the Nzhelele River at Ha-Musekwa on Monday evening (6 January), has left his family and the community in deep anguish. Despite desperate efforts by divers and local residents, the boy's body remains unaccounted for.
The tragedy unfolded when Desire, playing with other children near the riverbank, was reportedly pushed into the water by a seven-year-old sibling.
Prince Malindela Munzhedzi, Desire's uncle, described the heart-wrenching ordeal. "When we heard what had happened, we rushed to the river. We searched for hours, calling his name and hoping he would surface, but he didn't. The pain is unbearable. We feel helpless, but we can't give up," he said.
Divers arrived later that evening but were unable to locate the boy. The search was called off as darkness fell, with divers vowing to resume efforts on Wednesday morning, assisted by trained dogs. The family was informed that it may take up to three days for the body to float to the surface, adding to the delay in the search.
The delay has only deepened the family's despair.
"We searched the river until midnight without fear of the crocodiles, hoping for a miracle. The divers said the river is very sandy, making the search difficult. We are heartbroken, but all we want now is to find Desire and give him a proper farewell," said Malindela.
Police spokesperson in Vhembe W/O Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the family. "Our divers have thoroughly searched the river but, unfortunately, have not yet found the missing child. The search operation will resume on Wednesday morning. We will release an official statement once there is an update," Dathi said.
The Ha-Musekwa community has rallied around the Munzhedzi family, offering support and joining the search despite the dangers posed by the crocodile-infested river.
