In what is believed to be a major purge by the ANC against people who supported Mr Kgalema Mothlante at the Mangaung conference, as well as those believed to be associated with EFF president Julius Malema, several Limpopo mayors were given the boot the past week.

Musina municipal mayor Carol Phiri was fired on Monday and replaced by Mohloti Ramoyada. Her counterpart in Mutale, Ms Josephine Mukwevho, was replaced by Ms Sarah Rammbuda.

ANC spokesperson Khumbuzo Ntshaveni said the party has also received and accepted the resignation with immediate effect of Cllr Freddy Greaver, the executive mayor for the Polokwane local municipality. He was replaced with Thembi Nkadimeng.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ANC said that in accordance with the decision of the provincial executive committee (PEC) to restructure the political management team (PMT) of certain municipalities, the restructuring of the PMTs of Bela-Bela, Mutale, and Musina local municipalities resulted in the need to change the mayors of these municipalities.

"The respective affected municipal councils will undertake the necessary processes to elect the newly announced mayors and executive mayors to their positions. The process to designate speakers and chief whips in affected municipalities will be undertaken by the respective regional executive councils in accordance with ANC deployment policy," she said.
