There were a lot of surprises in the results of the NFD last weekend. Two of the top three clubs suffered defeats on Saturday.
The biggest shock of the day was at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town, where the pace setters, Baroka FC, unexpectedly suffered a shock defeat 1-3 by Vasco da Gama. The hosts struck as early as in the eighth minute through Siphesihle Stuurman. A clearing mistake in the 34th minute gave rise to the second goal for Vasco. Alcardo van Graan intercepted a back pass and doubled Vasco's lead.
Stanley Muishond was on target in the 80th minute with a long-range volley to make it 3-0. Baroka missed a fortune two minutes later. They were awarded a penalty after Jacky Motshegwa was brought down within the box. Donald Makondelela shot wide from the white spot. Baroka's solitary goal came in the 84th minute via Jacky Motshegwa.
Mbombela United emerged the victors in their Mpumalanga derby against Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni. Spurs lost 0-1 in front of their home crowd. Tommy Madlazi scored the goal that earned United the three vital points.
Amazulu lost their second match in a row, following their 0-1 defeat at the hands of Royal Eagles. Katlego Mphela scored the Eagles' goal in the 34th minute with a close-range strike. Moroka Swallows rose to the occasion and held the title chasers, Highlandspark, to a 1-1 at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Cyprian Kambule scored for Highlandspark, while Swallows retaliated through Clifford Mulenga three minutes before the final whistle.
In their Cape Town derby at the Athlone Stadium, Milano United lost 0-1 to FC Cape Town. Cape Town All Stars made African Warriors suffer their second defeat in a row when they beat them 0-1 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthaditshaba. Black Leopards' new head coach, Mr Sello Chokoe, steered his team to another victory when they beat Mthatha Bucks 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.
Thanda Royal Zulu played to a 1-1 draw with Santos at the Umhlatuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.
