Family members, community residents, and business proprietors were deeply saddened upon learning of the passing of renowned taxi owner and teacher Mr Simon "Mastermind" Makhode. He passed away at his residence in Madombidzha on Friday, 4 August, after a brief illness. At the time of his demise, he was 62 years old.
Makhode served as a teacher at Maluta High School and was the owner of a taxi business, as well as other enterprises, in the Vhembe region.
The family's spokesperson, Mr Tshilidzi Makhode, expressed the difficulty of coming to terms with his brother's passing. "Our hearts are heavy with sorrow as we have lost a pillar of our community. We relied on his guidance and learned a great deal from him during his lifetime."
He characterised his brother as a composed and dignified individual who contributed significantly to others. "For numerous years, he selflessly and faithfully served in parishes across the country, making himself available day and night to anyone in need," he remarked.
Mr Godfrey Phathela, spokesperson for the Makhado Long Distance Taxi Association (MALTA), conveyed their sadness upon hearing about the loss of one of their own. "The sorrow felt by the family also affects us deeply. We will forever hold his memory because he made substantial contributions to the taxi industry and the community. Passengers have told us that he dedicated everything to his work. He ensured their safe travel, treated them with respect, and maintained punctuality. We wish we could have more drivers like him," Phathela added.
Makhode's interment will take place in Madombidzha on Saturday, 12 August, with the service commencing at 06:00.
