Sixteen-year-olds Lufuno Muregu and Zwavhudi Musetha from Sinthumule High School returned home with top individual honours after impressing at the National Schools Football Tournament.
Musetha was named the tournament’s Best Midfielder and received a trophy for her outstanding performances. Muregu was crowned the tournament’s Best Defender and also received a trophy.
Both players represent Sinthumulekutama Ladies FC, which competes in the SAFA Women’s League.
Musetha, a Grade 11 learner, said her love for football began when she played with boys in the streets of her village.
“My dream is to one day play for Banyana Banyana,” she said.
She described receiving the Best Midfielder award as one of the proudest moments of her young career.
“This award means a lot to me. It is a step in the right direction towards achieving my dream,” she said.
Muregu, who is from Gogobole and is in Grade 10, said she was honoured to be recognised as the tournament’s Best Defender.
“I am very proud of this achievement. I also want to thank Sinthumulekutama Ladies for giving me the opportunity to develop my talent and gain valuable experience,” she said.
Sinthumule High School coach Mr Caswell Mohale said the school was proud of the pair’s achievements.
“Their achievements show that our school continues to produce talented footballers who can represent Limpopo and South Africa with pride,” he said.
Mohale said this was not the first time Sinthumule High School had produced national football talent. He pointed out that in 2024, two of the school’s players, Ambani Raphadana and Maanda Ramadwa, were selected for the South African Schools Under-15 girls’ team that travelled to Namibia to participate in the CAF African Schools Football Championship.
