The sixth edition of the annual Western Youth Cup was launched in Madombidzha on Saturday. The tournament is set to kick off this Saturday, with the final matches scheduled to be played on Monday, 16 June. All games will be played at the soccer grounds in Madombidzha.
The spokesperson for the tournament, Ronewa Nemakhavhani, said that 16 teams had registered. The champions will receive a trophy, R10,000, gold medals and football kits. The runners-up will get R6,000, silver medals and football kits, while the teams finishing third and fourth will receive R2,000 each.
Football legend Scara Masala said the people of Vhembe were very grateful for a tournament of this magnitude. "We believe it came at the right moment as it will keep people occupied during this period of the year," he said.
The fixtures for Saturday at the Arsenal grounds are as follows: Legendary FC vs Tshikota Defenders at 09:00, Town United vs Zamenkomste Liverpool at 11:00, Tornado FC vs Madombidzha One Touch at 13:00, Madombidzha Arsenal vs Hamula FC at 15:00.
The fixtures for the matches at the Try Again Grounds are: Tshiozwi Mates vs Black Stone at 09:00, Tshikhwani Stone Development vs Vapors FC at 11:00, Ramantsha Young Blackpool vs Bayen FC at 13:00, and Amavarara FC vs MP Rovers at 15:00.
The winners will play in the quarter-final matches on Sunday and the semi-finals and final will be played on Monday, 16 June.
