Sixteen teams will participate in the annual Chief Matsila Soccer Tournament, which will be played at Mathembani Grounds in Majosi, starting on Saturday, 30 May. The final is scheduled for 28 June.
The champions will receive R50,000, a soccer kit, gold medals and a trophy, while the runners-up will take home R30,000, a soccer kit and silver medals. The third-placed team will receive R15,000, a soccer kit and bronze medals, while the fourth-placed side will walk away with R10,000 and a soccer kit.
Tournament organiser Agreement Maluleke appealed to club officials and players to avoid misconduct such as bribery and assaults on referees. He added that the region is rich in football talent and has produced several notable South African footballers over the years. The aim of the tournament is also to unearth more local talent.
The opening fixtures for Saturday, 30 May, will see Magenge FC take on PK Nassir at 15:00. On Sunday, 31 May, Makhuba FC will face Smash & Grab at 13:00, while Pipa Young Stars will play against Nyama King FC at 15:00.
