SMSA are still in celebratory mood after being crowned the champions of the NW Mutengwe Soccer Tournament at the Manamani Grounds last Sunday. They beat Vyeboom Marika FC 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy.
SMSA were presented with cash to the tune of R15 000, a soccer kit, gold medals, a floating trophy and two soccer balls for the victory. The ceremony was held at the grounds shortly after the final game.
SMSA's journey to the final was rocky and thorny. They beat Ravies FC 15-14 in their quarterfinal match that was played at the same venue a day before. The winner was determined through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time.
Their semi-final match was against Rockers FC, whom they beat 5-4. Here the winner was also determined through a penalty shootout after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw during regulation time.
Vyeboom Marikana had beaten Muziafera Blue Eagles 5-4 to secure a place in the final. Vyeboom Marika were given R5 000, a soccer kit, silver medals and a soccer ball during the ceremony.
During the ceremony, one of the organisers, Mr Thilivhali Mutengwe, said that they were impressed by the conduct of both the players and the officials from the clubs throughout the tournament. He stated that they were planning to stage another tournament during the festive holidays, which will be even bigger in terms of the participating teams and the sponsorship amount.
