Residents of Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou are struggling to come to terms with the arrest of a well-known local soccer coach and academy director who has been charged with rape.
The 31-year-old man, who is a director at a local soccer academy, was arrested by the Thohoyandou Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit on Thursday, 25 June. He faces allegations of repeatedly raping a 15-year-old boy.
According to information available at this stage, the mother of the boy allegedly discovered conversations between the boy and the accused relating to sexual encounters.
“When confronted, the boy reportedly disclosed that the sexual acts had taken place on several occasions. The mother subsequently took him to a local medical facility for medical examination before the matter was reported to the police,” said Vhembe police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi.
The accused made his first appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 June. His case was postponed to Thursday, 2 July, for a formal bail application.
The arrest has left many residents stunned, describing the suspect as a respected member of the community and an active member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC).
“We know him as a staunch member of the ZCC and never imagined that he could be accused of such a serious offence. We are shattered as a community. At this stage, we are not saying he is guilty, but the mere fact that he has been charged with such a serious crime has left us in suspense. How can parents now trust such a person with children?” said one resident who requested anonymity.
The case has also drawn concern from community activists. Phathutshedzo Ramabulana of the Vhembe Concerned Group, an organisation advocating for the rights of women, children and vulnerable members of society, said the allegations were deeply disturbing.
“Parents must always maintain close relationships with their children and carefully screen anyone they entrust with their care,” he said.
The accused’s identity is known to Limpopo Mirror but is being withheld at this stage because he has not yet pleaded to the charges.
