The police in Limpopo have condemned the violent behaviour of pupils who carry dangerous weapons onto school premises.

This follows an incident at Nkatini High School at Shigalo village near Malamulele where an 18-year-old pupil was allegedly stabbed to death by his classmate, also aged 18. The incident took place on Wednesday, 22 August at around 12:00. It is alleged that the two had a fight during school hours, and later the suspect produced a sharp object and stabbed his school mate to death.

The police were summoned, responded immediately and started with their initial investigations. The suspect was subsequently arrested, and the murder weapon confiscated. The deceased was identified as Hloniphani Robert Golele from Shigalo village.

At the time of going to press the suspect has yet to appear in the Malamulele Magistrate's Court facing a charge of murder.

The police provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, said he is saddened by this incident, especially at the manner in which the young man lost his life within the school environment. "We call upon parents and guardians to join hands with the police and educators, to ensure that schools remain a safe environment at all times," said Ledwaba.

In the meantime, police investigations are continuing.
