"Sport is an important vehicle to cause harmonious interaction between people," said Mr Falaza Mdaka, Chief Whip of the Limpopo Legislature during a sports day at Wayeni last Monday.

Elderly and young people participated in tug-of-war, a fun walk, volleyball, netball, soccer and "bondelsport". Mdaka said he was proud of the quality of sports development in Wayeni and that there was a need to encourage the youth to become engaged in sports. He indicated that the youth must involve themselves in participating in different sporting codes. "Sport and education are the key for the future of our youth," he said. He requested the youth to stay away from crime and alcohol and to be aware of the threat of HIV/Aids.

According to the organiser, Mr Philly Baloyi, the main purpose of the sports day was to unify the elderly and young people of Wayeni and surrounding areas.

The issue of health among the elderly also formed part of the programme as the sports are also part of exercising. "It is in these events where people learn how to organize themselves," added Baloyi.
