Baroka FC caused a huge upset when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in their Telkom Cup quarter-final match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

Baroka FC caused a huge upset when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in their Telkom Cup quarter-final match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

Sundowns played entertaining football from behind throughout the game, but their strikers fumbled at the goal finish. Their frontrunner, Themba Zwane, was tightly marked by Bonginkosi Makume.

Baroka gained momentum as the game progressed. Their efforts paid dividends when they were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute. Ricardo Nascimento handled the ball inside his penalty area and the referee, Victor Gomes did not hesitate to point at the white spot.

Baroka's captain, Mdududzi Mdantsane, converted the penalty.

The goal did no demoralize Sundowns as they continued to play like a united team, creating some promising moves from the middle of the park. The score was 1-0 in favour of Baroka when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

In the second half, Sundowns called on Phakamani Mahlambi, Aubrey Ngoma and Jeremy Brockie, but their presence did not change the complexion of the match.

Baroka's second goal was an own goal when keeper Ryaad Pieterse pushed the ball to cross the goal line.
