The police at Waterval have arrested a 27-year-old man in possession of R1 500´s fake R100 notes.

According to the spokesman for the Waterval SAPS, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, Justice Sebula of Mpheni was arrested at the Hubyeni Shoping Complex in Elim when he was trying to buy items with the fake money.

He confirmed that Sebula was arrested last Thursday, after a tip-off from community members. "He even told community members to give him R1 000 in exchange of R3 000. Members of the community did not know that the money Sebula wanted to exchange was fake. People must know that money can´t be sold," Mabatha said.

According to Mabatha, a case of possession of counterfeit money has been opened with the police.

Sebula briefly appeared in the Waterval Magistrate´s Court, and the case was postponed.

Mabatha urged community members to be aware of fake money, now that the festive season is just around the corner. "We are appealing to members of the community to report incidents like this one to the police. Let us continue working closely with the police in the war against crime," he said.
