A suspect who was facing charges of murder and attempted murder, Kenneth Netshiungani (25), allegedly hanged himself in the Makhado Correctional Service Centre's cells on Monday.

He was in custody after he had allegedly stabbed three people - his girlfriend and her two children, a five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy - during an argument. The boy was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.

Netshiungani was out on parole when the latest incident took place. In 2010 he received a 15-year prison sentence for murder and was released on parole in April this year.

The police confirmed that Netshiungani was found hanged in the cell. They suspect no foul play. The deceased had allegedly used the waist cord from his track pants to hang himself. An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the death of the prisoner.

He had appeared in the court last Monday and his case was postponed to 30 January.
