A provincial police tracking team believes that they have caught a syndicate of criminals in Musina.
Last night (23 November) the team arrested a 30-year-old Ethiopian businessman believed to be in possession of suspected stolen goods. The police are investigating the possibility that the goods might have been stolen from hijacked trucks travelling from Gauteng and KwaZula-Natal.
Police confiscated 111 boxes of Soviet shoes, 528 boxes of Nivea Body Lotion, 67 boxes containing DVD players, 10 boxes containing wrist watch batteries and five Hisense cellphones. The goods are valued at R2 million, which included a vehicle that was allegedly used to transport the goods to buyers.
According to a provincial police spokesperson, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, it is believed that the syndicate distributes the stolen goods to business people all over the country. He said that the police were still investigating the case and that more arrests would be made soon.
In the meantime the arrested suspect will remain in police custody until he can appear in the Messina Magistrate's Court.
