Suspended crime unit cop back in court on more charges

Sergeant Fannie Nkosi faces new charges of obstructing justice after allegedly tampering with evidence in a 2022 dagga and firearms case.

Suspended Gauteng Organised Crime Unit member Sergeant Fannie Nkosi is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court today, 15 May, in connection with additional charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

According to police, the Commission’s Recommendations Investigative Task Team has brought further charges against Nkosi following investigations into alleged misconduct linked to a 2022 criminal case.

Police said the matter stems from the arrest of a suspect on 10 November 2022 for possession of dagga, unlicensed firearms and explosives.

Investigations allegedly revealed that Sgt Nkosi fetched the original case docket under the pretence that he had been sent by Head Office. A few months later, he allegedly returned to Thohoyandou and identified himself as a colonel from Head Office before removing confiscated dagga from police custody.

According to SAPS, the exhibit was later booked in at Head Office, but authorities subsequently discovered that one of the exhibit bags containing the dagga had allegedly been tampered with.

A case of defeating or obstructing the course of justice was then registered for further investigation.
