Bungeni-based author Sydwell Mthombeni has released his sixth book, Emananga (At the Desert) — a children's animated story written in Xitsonga that aims to instil values of honesty, hard work and accountability in young readers.
Officially released on Thursday, 12 June, the book is targeted at children aged three to 12. It also encourages parents to take an active role in shaping the moral foundation of the younger generation. Through its narrative, it explores the consequences of lying, stealing and dishonesty, while promoting the importance of reading and preserving the Xitsonga language.
"The reason I wrote this is to encourage learners to understand that every action has consequences," said Mthombeni. "I also want to show parents the importance of teaching their children to read. I believe this will help preserve our Xitsonga language."
Mthombeni's accomplishments extend beyond his latest release. In April 2023, he was honoured with the Best Teacher Award during an online ceremony hosted by the Cremase Speaking School in Nigeria, in recognition of his contribution to education and literacy.
A month later, he released his fifth book, a motivational title called The Renewed Life, further cementing his role as a literary mentor in the region.
When he is not writing, Mthombeni devotes his time to teaching and running literacy initiatives across Limpopo. He frequently hosts storytelling and poetry-reading sessions at local schools and community centres, using this platform to promote reading and cultural pride. His 2022 poetry anthology received praise for its focus on regional heritage and its ability to educate and inspire.
Although Emananga is aimed at children, Mthombeni believes the lessons it carries resonate with readers of all ages. The book is divided into five chapters, each delivering a clear moral message — from the value of hard work and honesty to the consequences of poor decisions.
"Stealing never pays," he said. "I want children to grow up knowing that working hard is the only way to achieve success."
