The quiet village of Vuu, outside Vuwani in Vhembe, has been left reeling after a tragic incident in which a teenage learner allegedly took his own life, prompting renewed calls for young people to seek help when facing personal challenges.
The deceased, identified as 15-year-old Mushaisano Ramulayo, was a Grade 10 learner at Mugoidwa Secondary School. He was found hanging in his bedroom on Friday, 10 April, at around 17:00, shortly after returning home from school. A friend who came to check on him made the discovery. Emergency services were called, and he was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Local traditional leader Vhafuwi Vho Thavhayamipfa Ramathithi described it as a devastating loss for the community. He said the boy’s family had only recently relocated to the area and that little was known about the challenges he may have been facing. It is understood that there may have been difficulties within the family, although the exact circumstances remain unclear.
“No matter how big the problem might be, taking one’s life is not an option. We urge all young people to open up and share their problems with those close to them. As leadership, we are here to assist, and professionals are also available to provide support,” he added.
Ramathithi confirmed that the family had indicated the teenager would be laid to rest at his father’s home village of Dzwerani over the weekend.
