The Natty Lions, a roots reggae band led by Elijah Nndanduleni Dombo (also known as The Lion Poet) and Ndivhuwo "Ras Natty" Mulugisi Mamafha, have just been nominated for Best Reggae Song at the 8th annual South African Upcoming Music Awards (SAUMA) for their song, Thambulo Yanga.
The SAUMA gives recognition to upcoming musicians and artists for excellence. Thambulo Yanga is from the album Huna Ndado Shangon. "We are very excited about the nomination and look forward to bringing the award home. We work hard as artists and when we get nominated and awarded for our work it is a bonus," said The Lion Poet.
The Natty Lions are not new to the SAUMA awards. They were first nominated for their album Jah Rastafarah in 2019, and finally won the Best Reggae Song award for Mary my Love off that album.
Natty King is from Tshilapfene and The Lion Poet from Vuwani. The group were formed after a chance meeting between the two artists and producer Andrew "MC-A" Nkhumeleni from Unik Prodakshin Studio, based in Tshiawelo, Soweto.

"We immediately started working on our first project together," said The Lion Poet. "Our first output came in 2017 with the release of Jah Rastafarah, followed by another album titled Legalize it in 2018. Last year, Huna Ndado Shangoni was released."
The Natty Lions' unique reggae sound and rare poetic lyrics have earned them their popularity. "We keep on getting good feedback, that our music is real to life, which only shows that we are on the right track. Our fans love and support us," said Ras Natty.
