The name Tshimangadzo Derick Phuluwa might not ring a bell for many, but he is an unsung hero who has worked hard behind the scenes for many years to make things happen. At the age of 62, Phuluwa deserves acknowledgement and recognition for his role in producing and marketing big names in the South African music industry.

Born in Hamavhunda and raised in Ngovhela village, where he presently resides, Phuluwa started his career as a police officer before making a significant career change to pursue music.

He explained how he found himself in the music industry: "I worked as a police officer in Thembisa, and some young men asked me to sponsor them with musical instruments. I bought them a full set, and they used to practise at my house every day. I liked how they played and advised them that we should start a musical band. We agreed, and the Derickans were formed. In 1989, we recorded our first album, 'Mahlalele,' with EMI Records, and it was a great hit. The album sold many copies, and we were invited to play at various music festivals around the country. That's when my seniors at work approached me and instructed me to choose either the police job or music. I chose music because that was what I enjoyed most."

Phuluwa said that the following year, the band left EMI and worked with Pastor Victor Phume. "We then changed the name to Venda Shark and recorded the 'Malende Jive' album, which was marketed and distributed by Gallo Records. The album was played on radio and television every day, and at times it got sold out in record bars. We used to perform around the country with the likes of CJB, Brenda Fassie, Sidney, Freddy Gwala, Pure Gold, Dan Nkosi, to name but a few."

He said that at one time, he had the honour of composing and recording the Orlando Pirates album titled "Sibuye Mazweni," which was a hit with soccer lovers. "That was my greatest honour, and I still thank Orlando Pirates for giving me the opportunity to demonstrate my musical potential."

He added that he had musically supported many artists over the years, many of whom he could not even remember. "I contributed a lot to the musical careers of artists like Spenza Man, Candy Stanza, Messiah Kinds, to name a few."

Asked what he is doing now, Phuluwa said that he spent most of his time assisting budding artists at the local Mphagane Recording Studio, as well as playing sessions in various recording studios in the province, and marketing artists through his company, Demba Manufacturing.
