Thengwe Flying Peace were crowned champions of the Elias Nefale Eco Estate Top 16 Soccer Challenge after defeating Berea FC 5–4 in a penalty shootout in the final on Monday at Tshishivhe Sports Ground.
The match ended 1–1 in regulation time.
Flying Peace coach Khuliso Magadidzha credited the team’s preparation for the win and thanked the tournament sponsor for its support of teams in the Vhembe area.
“We won because of our early preparations, and we are confident that we will return to the soccer field for next year’s games with more strength and energy to defend our title,” Magadidzha said.
“We achieved our goal and vision of creating a space for socialising and interaction among our men through soccer, while also rewarding deserving teams with cash prizes and football equipment,” said the managing director of the Eco Estate and tournament sponsor, Mr Elias Nefale.
Flying Peace received R30,000, gold medals, a soccer kit and a trophy. Runners-up Berea FC received R15,000, a soccer kit and silver medals. Third- and fourth-placed teams, ABC FC and Tshibvumo Football Academy, each received R5,000.
