The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in Vhembe officially launched the Vhembe Tshitale Elderly Soccer Tournament on 31 October at Mulima Tribal Office. The tournament, featuring 32 teams from across the Vhembe area, will be held on 7 November at the Mulima Grounds.

Director of Sport, Arts and Culture in Vhembe Collins "Thagalu" Thovhakale said the tournament promotes active ageing, physical fitness, and social cohesion. "This tournament is not just about soccer; it is about resilience, empowerment, and proving that age is no barrier to participation and excellence," he said.

He added that the event was a celebration of fitness and a reminder that determination and perseverance could lead to achievement at any stage of life. "Our grannies are role models for future generations, showing that strength, passion, and teamwork remain relevant throughout life," Thovhakale said.

Cllr Rose Mathukha of the Vhembe District Municipality urged elderly residents to stay active for better health. "Physical fitness helps maintain a healthy mind, control weight, and stay strong and flexible," she said. She added that the tournament allowed grannies to enjoy themselves, keep fit, and demonstrate to younger generations that age was just a number.
