The mighty Thohoyandou God is Love Choir has soldiered on for more than three decades. The group was formed in 1993 by three friends - Doctor Love Khorommbi, Edward Shandukani, and Colbert Tshililo - at Mphego village outside Thohoyandou. On Sunday, 1 December, they celebrated 31 glorious years of existence.
The celebration, a harmonious evening of praise and worship, with the choirs delivering their best music, took place at the Thohoyandou Library Gardens.
Among the choirs that entertained the guests was the evergreen Seshego Gospel Choir, which travelled all the way from Polokwane to join in the festivities. The highlight of the event was when choir members and guests enjoyed several cakes specially baked for the occasion.
Those who have supported the choir over the years were recognised with certificates of appreciation for their contributions.
Group leader and founder Doctor Love Khorommbi said they were excited to celebrate the many years they had spent ministering to communities through their soulful music. "We have many reasons to be in this celebratory mood. So many choirs have come and gone, but we have remained intact, even though members have come and gone. We are one of the very few remaining choirs, and we are happy that many of our founding members are still with the group," he said.
Khorommbi added that the choir had released numerous CDs and DVDs over the years and had participated in many major events, including the esteemed Mapungubwe Arts Festival. "This really calls for celebration, and that's what we are doing," he said.
Khorommbi mentioned that the choir would be engaged in several shows during the festive season. He also stated that they were planning to record a new album and DVD, but that would depend on the generosity of fans to finance the project.
