Thovhele Vho-Ratshibvumo Khakhu (88), who passed away on 8 June, was buried at Tshiendeulu last Saturday.

The administration officer at the Khakhu Traditional Council, Ms Josephine Nesemari, who had worked very closely with the chief, said it was a huge shock for them to lose such a hard worker. His death came at a time when he still had a huge role to play in the development of the area. "He was such an experienced traditional leader and we expected him to assist in training the new chiefs," she added.

"Khakhu was one of our chiefs who understood the way in which traditional leaders functioned. He had vast experience and people learned a lot from him. His death is a loss to both the family and the Khakhu community."

Nesamari described him as modest and compassionate, with the desire to help his people and uplift his community. During his reign, community councils such as the traditional council and Sanco committees fully co-operated and ensured development in the community. She said the community had lost a great leader like no other. She said Khakhu was a leader who understood the needs of his people.

Khosikhulu Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his condolences to the Khakhu family. Mphephu said Thovhele Khakhu had served the area with diligence. "He will be remembered for his hard work," said Mphephu.

He said Khakhu was a man of vision. "Most of the development that occurred during the time of the Khakhu era was his ideas. We have lost a charismatic, disciplined and enthusiastic leader," he said.

He added that the late Khakhu had contributed a great deal to the shaping of the local Khakhu territorial council. He was a selfless visionary and dedicated leader of people who is survived by five wives and 26 children.
