Three arrested after nearly R1 billion Mandrax bust at Beitbridge

This significant bust, following an eight-hour search of a truck from Malawi, highlights the effectiveness of intelligence and technology in combating organised crime.

A cross-border drug bust at the Beitbridge border post has led to the seizure of methaqualone powder worth close to R1 billion and the arrest of three suspects.

The operation, carried out on 27 May, involved border guards stopping a truck entering South Africa from Malawi. According to the Border Management Authority (BMA), the vehicle was flagged during a routine stop-and-search operation and directed for scanning.

Officials detected suspicious material during the non-intrusive cargo inspection, prompting a lengthy physical search of the truck that reportedly lasted about eight hours.

Authorities uncovered approximately 713 kg of methaqualone, also known as ABBA, a chemical substance commonly used in the manufacture of Mandrax. The consignment has an estimated street value of R998 million, making it one of the largest drug seizures recorded at the border post in recent years.

Members of the South African Police Service K-9 Unit and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, joined the operation to secure the scene and assist with investigations.

The three suspects were arrested at the scene and are currently being held at Musina Police Station. They are expected to appear in court on charges related to drug trafficking.

BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato said the seizure highlighted the growing role of intelligence and technology in combating organised crime at South Africa’s borders.

“This interception sends a strong message that South Africa’s borders are not a safe passage for organised criminal activities,” he said.

Investigators are now working to determine where the shipment was headed and whether those arrested are linked to a wider international trafficking network.
