Three suspected rhino poachers in court today

The case against three suspected rhino poachers, Onward Muchagowa (34) and brothers Deon (48) and Niklaas van Deventer (51), resumed in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court this morning.

The case against three suspected rhino poachers, Onward Muchagowa (34) and brothers Deon (48) and Niklaas van Deventer (51), resumed in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court this morning.

It was expected that Muchagowa would proceed with his bail application today, after Deon and Niklaas had finished their applications during previous court appearances.

The trio was arrested early in January after they allegedly discarded a rhino horn from a moving car while police were driving behind them.

Both Deon and Niklaas testified during their bail applications that the rhino horn did not belong to them, but rather to a certain Ruben. Their defence was that they had intended to contact the police to hand over information about Ruben, and in turn could be registered as police informants.

It is expected that the investigating officer in the case will testified for the state, after Muchagowa has finished his bail application.
