The Elim-based drama Thuso Murena (Lord Please Help) exposes the hidden realities of abuse, secrecy and generational trauma that many families keep silent about.
Released two weeks ago, the story follows Mmudzunga Mmbengwa, a young woman trapped in a home ruled by fear as she endures abuse at the hands of her father. Her sister, Ndamulelo, faces her own struggles: a broken relationship, an HIV-positive partner, and the challenges of raising a child in a fractured household.
Their mother, Mudzunga, is torn between protecting her children and holding together a family poisoned by lies and violence. As betrayal and despair deepen, Mmbengwa finds the courage to expose the horrors that have shaped their lives. But telling the truth comes at a heavy cost.
Produced under Beast of Tragedy, the film is unflinching in its portrayal of domestic abuse and the cycles of trauma that often remain unspoken across generations.
Actor Radia Rudzani, who plays a survivor, said preparing for the role was emotionally demanding. She drew on personal reflections and real-life stories to capture the weight of silent suffering.
"It was not easy, but I reminded myself that this role could give strength to someone watching who has been through the same. Before, I knew abuse existed, but I didn't fully realise how silence makes the problem worse. Acting in the role made me see how damaging secrecy is. It keeps victims suffering alone. Breaking the silence is the first step to healing," she said.
Producer Junior Mudau, known as Em.Jay Trigger, said the project grew out of his own experience. "I grew up in a community where these issues were often hidden or spoken about in whispers. Abuse, secrecy, and generational trauma are realities many families face, yet very few want to address openly," he said.
He added that it was important to use film as a mirror to reflect these painful truths, so that people can begin to confront them. "We hope the film will spark conversations through school discussions, community forums and social-media campaigns," he said.
