From 1 March this year, a car trip from Musina to Pretoria and back costs R30 more in toll fees. SANRAL has announced a 4.5% increase in toll fees, which means the round trip will now cost R696 in toll fees.
SANRAL increases toll fees annually to generate revenue for maintaining, operating, and improving toll roads. "This move is aimed at helping SANRAL fulfil its mandate of providing quality road infrastructure that enhances the lives of South African citizens," SANRAL said in a statement last year.
The increase in toll fees is impacting transport companies, which ultimately makes consumer goods more expensive. A driver of a small truck now has to pay R72 more than a month ago if he or she operates on the Musina-to-Pretoria route. The total toll fee for a Class 2 truck driver has risen to R1,730, while a Class 4 truck (more than four axles) now pays R2,606 for a round trip.
Ally Mophiba, spokesperson for the Seshego Taxi Association, told Limpopo Mirror that the sad reality was that taxi drivers had to absorb the increase. He said passengers were reluctant to pay more for tickets as many simply could not afford the additional cost.
"Drivers don't have fixed salaries; they earn based on commission, and the rise in toll fees will reduce the commission they typically make each day. We are stuck in a dilemma between raising our fare prices and being mindful of not overburdening our passengers," said Mophiba.
Mophiba suggested that SANRAL should consult with the taxi industry before increasing toll fees as this would provide a platform for taxi associations to voice their concerns and potentially reach an agreement on the percentage increase.
