Sixteen of the region's top teams will do battle from Thursday to Sunday (27 to 30 April) in the Horse Makuya soccer tournament. All the matches will be played at Hamakuya, Domboni (Makuya Try Again Grounds).
The tournament is organised to honour Mr Joseph Tshipuliso Makuya, also known as "The Horse", who was very involved in the development of football in Ha-Makuya and the surrounding villages.
Sixteen SAFA Vhembe SAB teams will participate in the tournament, as well as two teams from the Thulamela Local Football Association. Thursday's fixtures are:
09:00 - Masisi Young Stars vs Maholoni Stone Breakers
11:00 - Madridtas vs Rambuda Young Fighters
13:00 - Anel Real Viking vs Sambanḓou United Professionals
15:00 - Phaphama All Stars vs Dipeni FC
On Friday, the fixtures are as follows:
09:00 - Mahagala Young Stars vs Mavunḓe Hungry Vultures
11:00 - Tshivhiliḓulu Hungry Lion vs Beria FC
13:00 - Gondeni Big Cat vs Mukula Santos
15:00 - Makuya Try Again vs Tshimuthe FC
The quarterfinals are scheduled to take place on the 29th. The semi-finals will take place on the 30th, followed by the battle between two Thulfa teams, Makuya Junior Aces and Guyuni Hot Spur. The final will also be played on 30 April.
The winner of the tournament will receive R15 000, a soccer kit, a ball, a trophy and medals. The runners-up will get R7 000, a soccer kit, a ball and medals. The two teams losing in the semi-finals will each receive R2 000 and a soccer kit, while the teams that fell out in the quarter-finals will each receive a new soccer ball. The winner in the clash between Makuya Junior and Guyuni Hot Spurs will receive R1 000, and the teams will each receive a new soccer kit.
