Top businessman sent to jail for assaulting wife

By Limpopo Mirror • 11 October 2002

The Vuwani Magistrate's Court demonstrated to people that it does not endorse domestic violence and abuse against women, when it sentenced a local businessman, Stanley Botana Muthambi (45) of Tshimbupfe last Wednesday.

TSHIMBUPFE –

Muthambi, who owns a supermarket at Tshimbupfe, assaulted and stabbed his 42-year-old wife with a broken beer bottle. It is alleged that he arrived at his home at about 18:10, intoxicated. After a scuffle with his wife, the woman realised that she was not safe. She ultimately managed to escape through the window and ran away.

In a statement the police revealed that Mrs Muthambi returned to the house where her husband assaulted her again and this time stabbed her in the back with a broken bottle for several times. The stab wounds bled profusely. She was later helped by a passer-by, who saw her being assaulted.

He was sentenced to five years imprisonment without the option of fine. During the time of going to press, it was rumoured that Muthambi's wife, the complainant was showing remorse for having reported the case to the police and she was also planning to lodge an appeal to the court with the help of her husband's relatives.
