Tshakhuma-born artist Luckson Tshitangano, known as Toplizzer, is making waves on South Africa's music scene with his debut album Basi ya Lufuno ("The Bus of Love").

The 17-track project, released in September, blends storytelling and diverse sounds while staying rooted in Venrap, the Venda sub-genre of hip-hop that's fast gaining national traction.

Toplizzer's love for hip-hop began at home, inspired by his older brother's music collection. With no access to a studio, he wrote lyrics until 2018, when he recorded his first song at school. A 2019 matriculant of Todani Secondary, he credits Venrap pioneer Ramzeey as one of his biggest influences.

He describes Basi ya Lufuno as a reflection of real-life love stories — from joy to heartbreak. The album features collaborations with several emerging and established artists, showcasing his versatility and refusal to be confined to one sound.

Since its release, the album has received wide airplay on national and community radio, with several tracks becoming fan favourites across Limpopo and beyond. The growing recognition has brought Toplizzer national attention and multiple radio interviews.

Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his brand and elevate Venrap to new audiences. "Venrap is our culture, and I want to take it to the world," he said.
