The traditional leader of Vyeboom, Vhamusanda Vho-Gibson Masia, has urged the businesspeople from the village to plough back into the community to develop their area.
Masia spoke during the Mukwevho Gereda Remembrance Tournament that was held at Thomas Ntshavheni School's grounds, the Mufamadi Grounds, and the Vyeboom Marikana Grounds on Wednesday, 9 August.
The tournament was in honour of late businessman Mr Gereda Mark Mukwevho, who was the director of Real Paints and Chemicals. The 28-year-old businessman from Vuwani Township passed away in a car accident in 2015. The event also served as a birthday celebration for Mukwevho.
The two senior teams, Vyeboom Marikana FC and Vuwani City FC, played against each other, with Vuwani City beating Vyeboom 1-0. Vuwani City received a R1,000 cash prize, while Vyeboom Marikana took R500 home.
Primary schools from around the village battled it out on the soccer fields and netball courts. In soccer, Avhatondwi Primary beat Tshirunzanani 1-0, while Thomas Ntshavheni Primary beat Muhuvhini Primary 9-8 in netball.
The winners in the respective sporting codes took home prizes such as soccer kits, balls, gold medals, and trophies. The prizes were handed out by Ms Louisa Mukwevho, who is the late businessman's mother.
The organiser of the tournament, Mr Thendo Mukwevho, who is the director at Real Paints and Chemicals and also the younger brother of the late businessman, said the family had fond memories of his brother. "It is his birthday month and we felt that it would be befitting to celebrate it in this fashion. He loved sports, especially soccer, so there was no better way to celebrate his life than with a tournament like this. We hope that, wherever he is, his soul will be resting in peace," he said.
