The brutal killing of the traditional leader of Makhuvha Ndarieni, Khosi Vho Thiambiwi Erick Makhuvha (59), has sent shockwaves through the close-knit rural community, leaving residents gripped by fear, grief and unanswered questions.
The respected leader was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday, 2 March, around midnight, when two masked and armed men stormed his home. According to police, the suspects allegedly gained entry by breaking a window before demanding money and vehicle keys.
During the ordeal, the leader’s daughter was shot in the leg and later rushed to hospital for treatment. The attackers then proceeded to Makhuvha’s bedroom, where they fired multiple shots, killing him at the scene.
The attackers fled in Makhuvha’s white Toyota Hilux, taking a laptop, a television and two mobile phones.
The manner in which the traditional leader was killed has sparked speculation within the community, with some residents questioning whether the incident was a targeted hit rather than an ordinary robbery.
Community leader and relative of the deceased, Mr Ndivhuho Trinity Munyai, described the loss as deeply personal.
“I am deeply saddened by his passing. To me he was not only a leader, but a colleague in service delivery and an uncle. We last spoke on Friday, 27 February. We had a good conversation, not knowing it would be the last time I would see him alive,” he said.
Munyai said the late leader was humble and peace-loving. He recalled how Makhuvha often said, “Swina lau u ngasi li divhe” — meaning a person will never know his enemy.
Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for the two suspects, who were reportedly wearing balaclavas and security-type uniforms. One was armed with a firearm and the other with a knife.
The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the incident and directed police to use all available resources to track and apprehend the suspects.
