Treacherous Nandoni Dam claims the life of yet another fisherman

The traditional leader of Habudeli, Vhamusanda Vho Nndweleni Muthaphuli, has issued a stern warning to his community against fishing or swimming in Nandoni Dam, citing the risk of drowning or crocodile attacks.

The traditional leader of Habudeli, Vhamusanda Vho Nndweleni Muthaphuli, has issued a stern warning to his community against fishing or swimming in Nandoni Dam, citing the risk of drowning or crocodile attacks.

Vhamusanda Muthaphuli's remarks came after the body of a fisherman, Jeremiah Muguri, was recovered from the dam on Wednesday, 5 November. Muguri, in his 30s and from Masvingo Fambe village in Zimbabwe, had reportedly been missing for several days. Authorities suspect his small fishing canoe had capsized, leading to his death.

Nandoni Dam, completed in 2005, has claimed numerous lives over the years, although there were no drownings reported between 2024 and 2025. Despite repeated warnings from authorities, locals continue to risk venturing into the vast waters.

Speaking after the incident, Muthaphuli expressed deep sorrow. "This is tragic news. We had a quiet period with no drownings since my installation as traditional leader. The dam is home to crocodiles and hippos; if you are not devoured by these animals, you risk drowning. I urge the community to seek fish safely and avoid the deadly waters," he said.

The traditional leader also indicated plans to convene with his subjects to establish and enforce punitive measures for anyone flouting the safety rules.

Vhembe police spokesperson W/O Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that the incident is being investigated as an inquest case. "Preliminary investigations indicate that Muguri drowned while fishing with friends on 30 October. Investigations are ongoing," he said.
