The late Tshifhiwa Siwadawada, an innovative funeral undertaker who revolutionised the funeral industry in Vhembe, was given a hero's funeral last weekend.

Siwadawada (47) died in the Soutpansberg Private Hospital on 9 March. The news of his death sent shock waves through the community that he had served throughout his life. All speakers described Siwadawada as a pioneer, a born leader, and a man of vision.

The philanthropic businessman, who founded Shothodzo Funeral Undertakers and Acol (African college of learning) in Biaba township of Nzhelele, was laid to rest at the Tshitavha Vhulaudzi graveyard on 14 March.

The deceased's younger brother, Mr Humbulani Siwadawada, told mourners that although his brother's death was a big loss, he was encouraged by the fact that he had taught them the ropes of the business while he had still been alive. "I can say it here in front of these people that we will take this business to another level in honour of our late brother," he said.

He said the family had suffered a great loss with Siwadawada's death. "It is painful to lose an intelligent brother, but we thank God because He does everything for a reason." He thanked the community for their support.

Representing the undertaking business, Mr Sam Ntshauba said that Siwadawada had been a "soldier" for the bigger part of his life. "He was one of those men who fought for development in the prime of his life and excelled at everything he did. He will be remembered for his dedication and tenacity as a businessman and for his vision in education for young people," Ntshauba said. "The nation is in deep mourning, as we have lost one of our giants who still had a lot to offer to the development of the community."
