The soccer team of Tshikota High School has advanced to the national round of the Kay Motsepe U/19 School Cup, despite being narrowly defeated in the provincial finals by Northern Academy in Polokwane last Friday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with the winner determined through a penalty shootout, which Northern Academy won 5-4.
The winners and runners-up from each province will compete in the national competition. Before their loss in the provincial finals, Tshikota High secured a dominant 9-1 victory over Mahwahwa High from Mopani and defeated Capricorn High 2-1.
Tshikota High's coach, Mr Justice Matloga, was very excited about his team's achievement, noting that the school had been participating in the competition since its inception. This marks their fourth year of reaching the provincial final. "The boys are very happy about making it to the nationals. I hope that they will eventually achieve good results," he said.
Matloga also highlighted the tremendous support the team has received from the school principal and teachers. "Just getting to the national finals has boosted the boys' confidence and motivation. They are doing their best, and I'm impressed with their performance."
"Apart from the fact that there is a lot at stake in the competition, it is time for us to fulfil our promises. We promised the fans and all the residents of Vhembe and Limpopo that we would bring home some silverware from the national finals," he added.
